Every day, DJ Deja Vu holds down one of Hip Hop and urban music's most pivotal radio posts, at New York's Power 105.1 FM, transitioning from weekday mornings to afternoons. In addition to playing the hits and getting the scoop on music celebrities, the veteran radio show host and deejay told HipHopDX about her foundation, helping urban teens get involved in community outreach.
"It's an organization that I have called The Flava Unit Teen Community Group," said Deja Vu yesterday, "Our mission is to make a positive change in today's society through community serve. Basically, what we're doing is getting teens from the city and tristate area that will do community service within New York's five boroughs, and partner with existing organizations. We get the high school kids by pitching it over the radio, and getting celebrities to appear. They come a couple Saturdays out of the month; we have meetings [almost] every week. We're trying to get them away from the TV sets."
Flava Unit, which Deja Vu adds, is unique from the 45 King-owned record label-turned-Queen Latifah production company, has been in existence since 1996, early in the deejay's career. However, community outreach has long been a priority to the host. "Working with young people is my passion. If I wasn't working in radio, I'd probably be doing something in a community activist setting or capacity. Long term, I'd love to have a community center with a radio station inside."
Deja Vu also stated that among her many involved teens, several have gone out to PhD programs, as well as founding community centers and like-minded organizations of their own.
Lastly, the 10AM-2PM host, who shares the booth with Hip Hop legend Marley Marl for the old school lunch at noon, added that Power 105 has a new program director, which has "re-energized the station," according to the deejay. The station remains the leading competitor of famed Hip Hop mainstay Hot 97.
